A Research Accelerator

National security challenges are increasingly shaped by how quickly emerging technologies can be identified, developed, integrated and applied to real-world mission needs. The Kyl Institute for National Security (KINS) exists to connect the University of Arizona's deep research capability, scientific creativity and technical expertise with national security partners who need trusted, secure, mission-driven solutions.

KINS serves as a bridge between the University of Arizona and federal, defense, industry and policy stakeholders — identifying national security requirements, aligning them with university capabilities, supporting the capture of funded research opportunities and enabling effective program management once those opportunities become active contracts.

National Security Policy

Technology alone doesn't create opportunity. Through convenings like the National Defense Symposium, KINS brings together policymakers, senior military leaders, industry executives and university researchers to align technical opportunity with national security need.

Honoring an Extraordinary Legacy

The Kyl Institute for National Security is named in honor of Jon Kyl and his distinguished service to Arizona and the nation. A University of Arizona alumnus, Kyl served in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, where he emerged as a leading voice on national security, defense and intelligence policy. During his Senate tenure, he served as Senate Majority Whip and as a member of the Intelligence, Judiciary, Finance and Armed Services committees, playing a pivotal role in shaping arms control and strategic deterrence policy.

TIME magazine named Kyl one of “America’s 10 Best Senators” in 2006 and included him among the world’s 100 most influential people. He served as vice chair of the Congressional Commission on the Strategic Posture of the United States, which issued the landmark 2023 report on nuclear modernization and global deterrence. His career reflects a lasting commitment to public service and to advancing a strong, thoughtful national defense.
