About

Who We Are

National security challenges are increasingly shaped by how quickly emerging technologies can be identified, developed, integrated, and applied to real-world mission needs. Universities bring deep research capability, scientific creativity, and technical expertise to these problems. The Kyl Institute for National Security (KINS) exists to connect that capacity with national security partners requiring trusted, secure, mission-driven solutions.

KINS serves as a bridge between the University of Arizona and federal, defense, industry, and policy stakeholders. It identifies national security requirements, aligns them with university capabilities, supports capture of funded research opportunities, and enables effective program management once those opportunities become active contracts. In this role, KINS functions as a research accelerator, translating University of Arizona expertise into applied outcomes that support national missions and strengthen the University's research enterprise.

KINS's work centers on four strategic focus areas — Space, Optics, Hypersonics, and Information Dominance — with National Security Policy serving as a cross-cutting enabler that connects research capability to federal priorities, funding pathways, legislative interest, acquisition needs, and operational demand.

A Message from Our CEO

As Chief Executive Officer of the Kyl Institute for National Security (KINS), I am honored to lead this organization at a pivotal moment in its evolution. KINS is uniquely positioned at the intersection of national security mission needs and the University of Arizona's research enterprise, with the opportunity to significantly expand both its impact and institutional value in the years ahead.

KINS has established itself as a trusted partner in advancing national security research. Central to our work is the role of KINS as a research accelerator — connecting national security partners with the University of Arizona's capabilities and translating those relationships into funded programs, operational partnerships, and mission-relevant solutions.

I'm confident that through disciplined execution, KINS will strengthen its role as a trusted partner in advancing national security priorities while delivering sustained value to the University and its stakeholders.
